1st Step in Starting: a New Army Getting the Models

1st Step in Starting a New Army: Getting the Models

The first thing for a new army is buying the models.  I got all my new Necrons over Black Friday weekend because of all the sales online.  Some people prefer to buy the models as they go other people like me  buy everything at once.

However before you start your new army you have to choose what army you want to do.  One of the best ways to figure out what army to choose is to read the army books for the armies you are thinking about doing so you can get to know all about the different armies.  I was debating between a couple of different armies but I ended up choosing Necrons.  I choose Necrons for a couple of reasons.  The first is I want build and paint most of my army during winter break and Necrons are one of the fastest armies to do.  The second is they a recent codex so they will not be getting an overhaul any time.  The third reason is I think Necrons are cool and are different then my last 2 armies which were Space Marines and Space Wolves.  The last reason is Necrons are a competitive army and I really enjoy playing in tournaments.  The most important thing however when choosing an  army is to make sure that you like the models because nothing is worse than painting an army that you hate.

After you choose your army you need to figure out what to buy.   The first step if you are like me and buy everything at once is to read blogs and forums on the internet to figure out what are the good and bad units in the codex.  Because you don’t want to buy your models then assemble and paint them only to find out a unit sucks and you should have bought another unit instead.  The next thing you should do is look at army lists people post online and get a feel for what a general army looks like.  After that it’s usually a good idea to make a couple of lists on your own to figure out what exactly you want in your army. After you make a couple of you own army lists you should post your list ideas online to see what other people think as well but remember its your army so you can use any models that you want in it as long as it follows the FOC.

So after I did all my research I started to order my models.  For troops I wanted mainly Immortals instead of Warriors because I think they are cooler but I still ordered some warriors as well in case I ever wanted some.  So I got 40 Immortals total that’s 8 boxes and I also ordered a battle force so I had a full unit of warriors and a transport as well as some extra Immortals.  When It comes to troops I am a firm believer in trying to have 1 unit for every 500 points especially in 6th edition where a lot of the missions involve objectives.  So that took care of my troops next I looked at HQ choices I ordered 2 Command Barges because I think their awesome and most people recommend you run them in pairs in 6th edition to get the most out of them.  Next I ordered a finecast Over Lord because I like the model and started to think about my Royal Court for my Overlords.  For my Royal Court I got 3 Crypteks and 1 Lord with a res orb if I decide I need any more I plan on converting them from the bits I have left over. I also ordered a Destroyer Lord because I want a HQ choice that can go with Wraith or Triarch Praetorians because none of the other HQ choices are jump infantry.  So that took care of My troops and HQ I only ordered 2 special characters Anrakyr the Traveler and Vanguard Obyron because I liked the models but will probally not to use them because where I live we have a no special character rule at are local club.

So next I looked at Fast Attack section which is supposed to be the best section in our book.  From everything I have read online Wraiths are one of the best units in are book.  So I decided I wanted Wraiths and not just 1 squad but 2 so I ordered 4 boxes so I have 12 total.    The store ordered from sells bits so I got 5 scarab bases so I would have a full squad along with the ones from the battle force.  I also wanted a fun unit so I ordered 2 boxes of Tomb Blades to make a full unit.  After I got models for the fast attack Section I looked at Elites now Elites are not the best section of are codex but I really like the models and rules for some of them.  So I ordered Triarch Praetorians/ Lynchguards which really look cool so I got 3 boxes of them and I plan to make an 8 man squad of Triarch Praetorians to go with my Destroyer Lord and a 7 man Lynchguard squad.  I also ordered a Triarch Stalker cause they look sick and shouldl be fun to play with.

The Last Section left was Heavy Support which is another of the good sections in our codex.  I started with 3 Annihilation Barges because for the price you can’t bet em.  After that I ordered 2 Doom/ Night Scythes because right now from what I hear flyers are amazing.  I plan to make the Doom/ Night Sythes so I can switch between the 2 so then I can make them into whatever I need for my current list.  The last thing I ordered was another Ghost/ Doomsday ark but I’m not sure which 1 I will make it into.  The only thing I didn’t order that I was thinking about was a Monolith  but from what I hear they are nowhere as good as they use to be but I can always get one I the Future.

So Heres the total list of what I ordered: 5 Command/ Annihilation Barge boxes, 1 Battle Force, 5 Scarabs, 8 Immortal/ Deathmark Boxes, 4 Canoptek Wraith Boxes, 2 Tomb Blade Boxes, 2 Doom/ Night Scythes, 1 Ghost/ Doomsday Ark,  3 Triarch Praetorians/ Lynchguard boxes, 1 Triarch Stalker, 1 Overlord, 1 Lord w/ res orb, 3 Crypteks, 2 Special Characters

I have everything I need now to start to make my army.  Now the Next Step is deciding on a color scheme which I will post about.  After that Its time to assemble and paint everything.

Thanks for reading if you have any recommendations for future posts plez let me know or if there is something I can do different.  This is my first blog so I ma new at this and would appreciate any comments or recommendations to make this blog better.

Happy Holidays Everyone, Grizwald
